Internet connection is interrupted constantly

My internet connection is disconnected about every five seconds. I am
getting the tiny popup dialogs on system tray about "A network cable is
unplugged" and then "Local Area Connection is connected". These two dialogs
alternate about every five seconds. . It is driving me crazy. I ran the
anti-virus scan and found nothing. Does anyone know what is going on? Thanks
for your help.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

Since you know the machine is clean, here are some other general
troubleshooting suggestions. As with all troubleshooting you need to be
methodical in your testing, making only one change at a time and testing
after each change. Keep notes if you will find that helpful. Obviously
if something works you don't need to continue with the other suggestions!

Since you mention an ethernet connection, I assume you have broadband of
some sort and are connecting to either a router or directly to a
cable/dsl mode. As you can see, the suggestions start with the simplest
and least invasive troubleshooting and go up from there if the preceding
step(s) didn't work.

1. Power-cycle the modem and router. Power down the router and the
modem, wait about a minute, power up the modem first and then the router.

2. Check with your Internet Service Provider to see if they are having
problems on their end.

3. Swap out the ethernet cable to the router or the modem.

4. If using a router or combo modem/router, change to a different lan port.

5. Swap out the network adapter card in your computer if you have a
desktop. If you have a laptop, borrow a pc card ethernet adapter or use
a usb-to-ethernet adapter.

6. If using a router, replace it.

7. If using a modem, replace it.
