I have a ACER 5100. I reformatted the hard drive and installed XP w/SP3.
When I had all the ACER garbage on my laptop I had an Internet connection
Icon in the task bar. I no longer have it. Can someone tell me how to put
it back.

Yes, re-install your ACER garbage, that's where your internet icon resides.

Start > Connect to > Show all connections

Right click the connection name (local area connection or wireless
connection), then check "Show icon in notification area when connected"

* select "properties" after the rt. click.
