Since several weeks programs such as google earth, itunes music store,
extensions to firefox, msn live messenger, etc. cannot access the internet
anymore for functions they should execute. I already tried to enable an
exception for them in the Microsoft Firewall tab but it did not help. I'm
afraid it might be due to the XP Service Pack 2 but am not certain nor do I
know how to reenable these program's access (they did function properly
before). Any suggestions?

I can assure you that it is not due to the SP Service Pack 2 (All except MSN
LIve run on mine). Do you have some other Firewall running? If so, it and
the Microsoft Firewall will clash, turn off one or the other.

No, unfortunately I don't. I don't know how to reestablish access for those
programs though.
