I would like to provide internet access to a remote
computer connected via dialup modem. In other words, I
would like to share the broadband internet connection on
computer 1 with computer 2 connected to computer 1 via
dialup modem.

you could take remote control of comp#1 from comp#2 over a dialup and use
the broadband on comp#1 ...

no way you're going to "share" a broadband connection over a modem tho

You can do this using a cross over cable, network
interface card to network interface card, or by using a
router, but not with a phone modem because phone modems
aren't compatible with broadband, unless your broadband
connection is DSL. Computer 2 needs some kind of physical
connection to the broadband connection in order to share
it. Cross over cables are among the most cost effective
methods to use, and will only work with two computers, no
more. Proxy settings factor in as well. The XP help and
support feature will have more explicit instructions for
this configuration.
