I have recently upgraded to XP from Me and the last few
days have felt like one long nightmare. (and there doesn't
seem to be an end in sight) One of my main problems is,
when I try to connect to the internet using Start-Connect
then select my ADSL BROADBAND provider selection, I get an
error saying that my username and or password are
incorrect. But they arn't. The strange thing is that if I
bring up Internet explorer or Outlook express they both
happily connect to the internet. I just cant connect using
the Connect To feature, I have to open up my mail or open
up Internet Explorer to get on the Net. Can anyone help
Please :)

A broadband internet connection is ALWAYS on. You do not need to "connect".

Maybe I should have made myself clearer. It is an ADSL
broadband connection using a ADSL MODEM,which is
permanenlty available, however it requires a username and
password to connect, as you can connect and disconnect as
much or as little as you like (no phone charges).
I have the IE and OE configured to remember password
and "dial" to connect whenever I open the program (to save
some keystrokes) Even though there is no number as such it
just activates the ADSL modem. I can manually "dial" from
IE or OE to connect to the internet but when I try to
Connect manually using the START-CONNECT TO facility
instead I get an error that my username and/or password is
incorrect.

Then create a new internet connection and choose "set up my connection
manually". You then have the opportunity to choose "Connect using a
broadband modem that requires a user name and password".

Go to control panel / network connections, and click new connection wizard.

This is not necessarily correct. DSL comes in two flavors, an
always-on one, and a dialup one, which is somewhat less
expensive.

I have always been spoiled with an "always on" cable connection, and was
until now unaware that there was a "connect on demand" broadband connection.
Live and learn.

ADSL can be set up in two ways. In one case, generally used in the US,
it connects to its 'modem' via an Ethernet connection, using a technique
'PPPoE'. IN the other, used in the UK, the 'modem' appears as a dial up
connector (usually as if an ISDN one) - this uses PPPoA. These PPPoA
devices don't work if you try using XP drivers, which assume PPPoE, and
I suspect that your Connect to problem arises from a similar assumption.

What I did when I had such a 'modem' was to right drag it out of the
Network Connections window to the desktop, and 'create shortcut here'.
I could then just double click on that to connect (and in practice then
moved it into the Startup folder, so it came up immediately at boot)
