internal flash memory reader/writer

looking for an internal floppy disk drive with a flash memory reader/writer
built onto it, sort of like a 2 in 1 device, there are plenty of 7 in 1
devices with firewire and usb etc on the front, but i dont have any firewire
capability on my motherboard and all of the USB headers on the board are
taken up (i have a vantec nexus multifunction panel that has usb on the
front) now all I am looking for is something that will fit into one 3.5 bay
and have a floppy disk drive and a flash memory reader/writer in one, cany
anyone point me in the right direction

This has the flash reader/writer and the floppy drive, but you will need a
USB header.

Soyo makes (or used to make) a PCI card with about 5 USB 2.0 headers, but it
might be a little hard to find.

The Mitsumi that James Fox linked is the most popular but
they'll all need a USB port for the flash reader, I don't
think it's even (reasonably) possible to put a flash reader
on a floppy interface.

there were floppy adapters for certain memory cards (sanDisk) that
could be popped into FD drive just like an ordinary FD; but were
painfully slow IIRC ...

Yep, these days with flash memory so cheap it even seems
painfully slow to use a USB 1.1 interface.

Now that you have jogged my memory, there are some that run off the IDE
(hard drive, not floppy drive) cable. I have used one myself, but it was
tricky to work with. Sometimes it liked being the master, sometimes the
slave, and sometimes it wanted to be the only device on the cable; it just
depends on your controller, and what other device was on the cable. Also,
the IDE/ATAPI spec is not meant for removable devices, so the CompactFlash
card is not always recognized upon insertion; you may have to re-boot. All
in all, the USB type devices are better, unless you plan to leave the CF
card always in the slot (as for a backup device).

Just search CompactFlash reader ATAPI (or IDE), and you will find some.
Here is one, but not the one I have used:

There are less expensive ones out there if you search.

None allow hot insertion though do they? That would be too
great a limitation for most people, IMO. Some PCI ATA cards
might allow it, but adding such a card seems less desireable
than just adding a USB card unless user also needs another
IDE channel for something else.
