Internal Firewall?

R

Ryan Paque

I'm stuck... I once had WinXP Pro's Remote Desktop working perfectly,
I then was forced to re-install due to a hard drive crash. Now, no
matter what I do, I can't connect to remote desktop from another computer.

I have opened up port 3389 in my firewall, and I have completely
disabled XP's built-in firewall. Allow Users To Connect is checked...
but all connection attempts from outside my computer are met with a
"unable to connect...remote connections might not be enabled..." error.
I can attempt a connect from within my own network, and I get
the "you are already logged onto the console" error.

Now, I can ping my computer from outside the net and connect via VNC,
but telnet attempts to port 3389 are met with failure every time.

Terminal Services is active... is there something else I can check?

Are you forwarding the port to the right IP address in your hardware
firewall?

You won't be able to connect via RD to the same machine you are
using...

I'm using a software firewall, and I have opened port 3389 for all
connections. I tried accessing RD from the local machine just to see if
I got a response, which I did. I cannot get a response from outside the
network though, which leads me to believe there is something in
Windows XP itself which is either malfunctioning, or blocking access to
that port from the internet.

try resetting tcp/ip

go to the command prompt
type in the following command:

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

restart your computer, router, modem, etc.

if that doesn't work you might try uninstalling tcp/ip and
your firewall altogether (firewall first!) and then upon
restarting your machine reinstalling tcp/ip, verifying the
connectivity of rd, then installing and configuring your
firewall software.

if that doesn't work, uninstall and reinstall your
ethernet card (in the device manager, not physically)
this will do all of the above except remove the firewall,
which should be removed before anything is done just to
test it anyway.

trust me, i fix this like 40 times a day.
