If the date/time reverts after the computer has been turned off, then
you need to replace your motherboard battery. This is very easy and
inexpensive (around $5USD or less).
Thx this is sounds like the answer. My mother's laptop has been having
problems and I was wondering whether it is possible the same solution is
needed. Do laptops function in the same way and is it possible to replace
any battery?

Look closely at the case (and paperwork on the computer). Often there will
be a place where you can take out a screw and expose the battery. Do NOT do
that if you don't know ofr sure it's the battery though! Your mfg site
might have info on it too.
