Intermittent whine from Maxtor drive

Wondering if my Maxtor hard drive is going bad. It doesn't make a
continuous whine, like the spindle being worn. Just every now and so it
will make a short-lived waaaa-errrrr-annngg noise almost like it is
having difficulty during a search. However, there isn't even any disk
access at that time. It's almost like it occasionally makes some self
correction that lasts about 10 seconds but it's not from trying to get
any data from it (the heads aren't making any thunka-chunka noise to
indicate they are moving).

My Maxtor drive is by far the noisier of my two drives. The other one
is a 7200RPM Western Digital. The Maxtor spins at 5400RPM. The
background noise level of the Maxtor is much louder, almost as though
there is too much spindle friction. It's the white noise that you hear
from all drives when they spin. It's just louder with the Maxtor.

For the longest time, I thought it was a fan (CPU or PSU) that was maybe
getting out of balance due to wear or happened to get air flow just
right to cause turbulence that would vibrate. It weren't the fans. My
system is quieter overall with the removal of the Maxtor hard drive (it
sits atop my desk and close to me). However, I'll be moving it to the
side of the desk on the floor to free up some desk space so maybe the
Maxtor's white noise level won't be too bad. My concern is what is that
occasional 5 to 15 second whine that happens maybe once or twice and
then doesn't happen again until many days later. It certainly catches
my attention and breaks me away from my current work as your gut
instinct is to wonder what's breaking.

I forgot to mention that this is not a new drive. It is over 3 years
old. This occasional whine has been occurring sporadically for many
months. In fact, I cannot say how long it has been occurring because
it's been so long that I've grown accustomed to the louder white noise
it generates and the occassional whine.

I get this with an older IBM drive.Seems ok and there's no critical
data on it so I'm not bothered but in your case I would at least back
up critical data to another media like CDR/W/DVD/R/W disks and also
run the free,"Powemax" software from Maxtor,
http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/powermax.htm

Note:Maxtor have been very good in the past and e-mail them and you
never know even though the drive is out of warranty they may replace
it.They do require you to run the Diagnostic software anyway even on a
warranty drive.
HTH :)

Yep, everything gets backed up regularly (CD-R is used periodically and
tape is used for more often backups). This drive is the 2nd physical
drive and where I put my data. All programs, My Documents, Outlook,
etc., get [re]configured to put my data on this drive. Then when (not
if) I have to reinstall Windows then I can just reinstall it and the
applications and still have my data on this 2nd drive.

I checked the warranty. It's good for 3 years. The 3-year warranty ran
out in February of this year. So I'm a tad over 9 months out of
warranty. I didn't bother asking since it is quite a bit past the
warranty period.

The Maxtor has always been a noisier drive than my Western Digital
although the Maxtor spins at 5400 RPM and the WD spins at 7200 RPM. If
I put it back in the machine, I'm going to move it out of the 3.5" cage
and into a 5.25" bay. I didn't like the two drives next to each other
which resulted in each heating the other up. Now I'm looking at how I
could cheaply install the old Maxtor in a 5.25" bay using something that
may quiet it some. I won't be able to silence its ambient noise but
maybe I could isolate it from transmitting that noise to the case and
keep the case from resonating the noise. I might just try rubber
grommets with the 5.25" adapter.

I have one of the slightly newer 7,200 rpm 40 gig drives and it's
quieter than my old IBM which was in turn quieter than my old Fujitsu
e.g it's now silent :)

if the drive is otherwise Ok & you just wanna silence it a bit, there
is an idea on my site under comp/mods ... :)
