Intermittent Ping issue

Hi All,

I am experiencing a strange issue with one of my Windows 2000 servers
(our File server), and was wondering if anyone had experienced the
same.

The box is an HP DL380 running W2k SP4. There is no issue with the CPU
usage, RAM etc, and I have not made any hardware/ software changes
recently.

This afternoon, several people reported being kicked off their shares.
I tried to remap them, but an error message stated that "the computer
is not accepting connections at this time", although I could ping it.

I went into the server, and checked the License Logging service, which
had been disabled. I could ping out from the server without issue, and
there were no relevant messages in the Event Viewer.

I rebooted the server, but the "preparing network connections" screen
took ages..longer than 15 minutes, so rebooted again. Same again, so I
let is continue. I was finally able to log in.

Now, when I ping the File server, about 1 in 10 pings fail, although
when pinging the remote machine from the server, there is a 100%
success rate, indicating that the issue is not hardware related....

Any ideas????

Since you can ping other but have problem to ping the server, check the status of the server NIC. make sure both sent and receive packets are active.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the reply.

I checked the server NICs (we have teamed cards) using the HP
Diagnostic tool, and the tests were succesful. Additionally, pinging
the loopback address, reseating the network cables etc were all fine.

It was odd, the File server could ping some machines 100% of the time,
but couldn't ping others at all, even though they were on the same
subnet. In any case, changing the actual cabling seemed to do the
trick, so all is well now.

Cheers
