For several weeks, every few reboots of my computer, Windows halts booting,
with an error message, including the following:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\System32\Config\system"
This error will not go away until I reboot from the Windows installation CD
and use the recovery console. However, even if I do nothing but simply exit
from the recovery console, Windows and all my applications will operate
normally, and I can usually reboot a few times before I get the error again.
Several web searches, including on this forum, lead me to this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
I thought the instructions implied a situation in which Windows cannot be
booted normally. In my case, I could, so I tried restoring my registry to a
restore point a few days before the first time I saw the problem. After about
two days, however, the problem came back.
I also noticed that Kaspersky Anti-Virus, following a complete system scan,
reported that it could not scan one file because the file was corrupt.
Frustratingly, it did not identify the file. Also, I ran "CHKDSK /r" from the
recovery console, and it reported that my hard drive had unrecoverable
errors, but didn't offer further details. I've tried the Windows graphic
scandisk, which reported no errors, and a hardware diagnostic from the hard
drive manufacturer, which also reported no physical problems with my hard
drive.
I'm at a loss how to proceed.
