interesting problem

microsoft

I have recently redone my system from scratch (reformat and reinstall) after
losing my system HDD. A week or so ago I noticed that if I left the system
idle for more then 15 mins or so, dfrgntfs.exe and defrag.exe would start
running and dfrgntfs.exe would use 99% of CPU. I was running Diskeeper
Server on this pc at one point, but as soon as I noticed this, I uninstalled
it. Even after uninstalling it, dfrgntfs still runs by itself. I have also
tried renaming dfrgntfs.exe to dfrgntfs.exe.old so whatever program was
calling it, it wouldn't be able to find it. This had no effect. It seems
that the system automatically recreated dfrgntfs.exe when it couldnt be
found. I have run AdAware, Spybot S&D, and a full system scan with NAV.
None of the programs found anything of interest. I have also searched
through the registry for dfrgntfs.exe and did not find anything out of the
ordinary. I have looked in my startup folder, msconfig, and task scheduler
to see if I could find anyting that could be causing this problem and have
found nothing.

Has anyone else come across anything like this before?

Thanks!!
John

Maybe when you uninstalled Diskeeper Server, the version of Diskeeper that
ships with XP took over utilizing the scedule that Diskeeper Server was
following.
I can't tell on my system as I am running Executitive Software's Diskeeper
Pro V.8 something, but can you not get into XP's Diskeeper and set up a
schedule that will have it run when YOU want it to instead of scheduling
itself to hog 99% of your horsepower when IT feels like it?

Before I uninstalled diskeeper, I cleared all the schedules to see if that
stopped the problem. It made no difference. The XP defragmenter does not
have a scheduling feature, it must be manually done through the task
scheduler. I have checked the scheduler, but there is nothing in it.

I tried to terminate the process manually, but I could click End Task till I
wore out my mouse and it would still continue to run. Also, while it is
running, it wont let me open windows defragmenter because it "does not
support running more then one instance".....The process will continue to run
untill I am forced to shut down and restart. (the longest processor time ive
seen yet is 18:24:03 in hh:mm:ss ).

Thanks David, that appears to have solved the problem!

I gave you the two references that answer you question.
Read the docs.
