interactive buttons have red Xs no text

A group of interactive buttons are outlined but there is a little red x in a
box in the upper left corner of the button--no color no label? Does anyone
know how to correct this?

have you published the images that make up the buttons? Did you have a
Web/Site open when you created the buttons?
