Intepub, what is it?

Andrew

A folder called Intepub appeared on my C drive today. It looked suspicious
so I deleted it. Each time I reboot it reappears. Anyone know what it is and
how to permanently delete it.

It is the default folder used to contain your web and ftp roots for IIS. So
basically your computer is trying to be a web server. If it is getting
regenerated automatically, then you need to uninstall IIS. Go to your
Contral Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Components, and look for
Internet Information Services. Uncheck that.

No, that would be \inetpub

Notice the subtle difference in spelling.

Google turns up about 1,100 entries for "intepub" but they all seem to
be similar misspellings. I doubt if deleting the IIS (if it really
were that) folder, would rebuild itself upon a reboot. If this is
truly "intepub", it is something else, probably attempting to disguise
itself.

I think Andrew needs to verify and reply back with the /*exact spelling*/ of this folder for
the best response to his problem.

One would have to go out of their way to install IIS and active IIS on a
Windows NT base Pro or Server edition O/S such as Win 2K, XP and Win 2K3
and the InetPub directory would be laid down at that point. Inetpub just is
not going to show up out of nowhere if it was not there before, according
to the poster. And it's most likely protected by the O/S while IIS is
running and cannot be deleted off of the machine I would think. But I am
not going to try and find out if it is protected by trying to delete it off
one of my machines. ;-)

It does seem suspicious.

I can now see how intepub got onto my computer. After rebooting I had a
message to the effect that remote desktop update was missing. I did a
search on the MS site and found and followed the instructions to install it
asuming that was what was missing.

Tge Intepub folder has sub folders catalog.wci and mailroot. Mailroot has
the "suspicious sounding" Badmail, Drop, Pickup and Queue.

Yep, you installed IIS. And you're mispelling it, it's "Inetpub" (e before
t).

...would have saved a bunch of us time and speculation, eh? :)
