Intellipoint "close" button allocation

J

Jon Sandys

I've read a few comments about features stripped from
intellipoint 5.0, and while they don't bother me much, one
aspect doesn't seem to work as it did. I had "close"
assigned to the thumb button on my old intellimouse
explorer, which always worked flawlessly (sometimes too
flawlessly, when I hit it by mistake during games!).

However, after buying one of the new tilt wheel wired ones
(only just out here in the UK) it doesn't work the same way
- folder windows, etc. close OK, but other times it behaves
weirdly or does nothing at all. Given the other problems
people are having, hopefully whatever the bug is causing
this can be fixed too.

As a side note, I tried going through the official support
channel only to be told that the Product ID I entered
wasn't valid for the country I'd chosen (UK) - rather
unusual, given I bought the thing in a UK shop yesterday!

Going back and changing my country to the US gave an
interesting answer - I was told something along the lines
of "the product ID you've chosen is for an Intellimouse
Explorer 4.0, which does not correspond to the category you
selected (hardware). Please enter the correct product ID
for hardware."

Given there wasn't an option for mice on the initial list,
"hardware" seemed like the best bet. I'm surprised some
assistance couldn't have been given, especially since the
PID I entered was correctly identified!

I haven't got a solution for you I'm sorry to say, but I have found exactly
the same problem. I have a wireless intellimouse explorer, and it worked
fine. However, due to a re-install of other software I needed to re-install
the intellimouse software. I couldn't fund the version I had been using
(v4.12) so I downloaded the latest update, version 5.

Now I find that my large thumb button won't always cause programs or windows
to close, whereas the older version did so flawlessly. I need to try
uninstalling v5 and sticking v4.12 back on again.

It is very annoying that this compatibility issue appears to be a known
problem - until I saw your message I thought I was the only one experiencing
this irritating glitch.

Im experiencing the exact same thing: the 'close' option seems to send a
CTRL-F4 (close MDI window) instead of an ALT-F4 (force application close).

Example:
Open MS Word 2000, click the close button on the mouse (I mapped it to the
small thumb button). The document closes, but the application stays open.
Previously I could click the button and it would close the entire active
application.

Bring this functionality back!

Salvatore - you are exactly right. I get the same problem in a couple of
applications (MS Windows Media player v9 and ACDSee) where the window within
a program closes, but not the actual executable itself.

I also say "bring the original functionality back"!

I posted earlier today, in this thread, that uninstalling v5 and
reinstalling v4.12 had solved the problem. It seems I was a bit premature -
v4.12 seems to work for a while but then, after a few minutes of opening up
IE6 and minimising and closing, doing the same with Media player and windows
explorer, the programmed buttons "forget" their function and I lose the
ability to minimise and close with the small and large thumb buttons.

Any ideas on how to strip out all registry references to Intellipoint
software so I can do a completely clean reinstall?

Or is there another approach to correcting the errors that v5 caused and
that now seem to be lingering?

Cheers

I uninstalled v5, installed v4.12 and then, when I had the same symptoms, I
uninstalled v4.12 and reinstalled it. That didn't work so I uninstalled
v4.12 again and next, I went through the registry and deleted all references
to "intellipoint" or "point32".

Then I put v4.12 back on again and got the same problems. So inthe end I had
to roll back to a restore point immediately before I put v5.0 on - it now
works properly.

What a pain in the arse to have to do all of this with software that is
supposed to be an upgrade.

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

Exactly the same problem here. But I have a new Wireless IntelliMouse
Explorer 2.0, so horizontal scrolling only works with IntelliPoint 5. As I
have mapped Ctrl-F4 to a shortcut, sometimes the Close-function doesn't
close the window but opens the shortcut.
If you find any solution to remap Close to Alt-F4, I'd be happy if you'd
post it here :)

I uninstalled 5 and reinstalled 4, and have my original functionality back.

Nope, definitely not! I'm guessing Intellipoint 5.0 has
been out for quite some time, so I'm stumped as to why
Microsoft hasn't patched what I assume is a fairly simple
to fix problem. I'd be happy with 5.01, as long as the
close function works properly!

IMHO as long as MS can sell new mice 99% of those first-time MS mice
purchasers have no idea what features have been stripped away from previous
versions. That being so I suppose MS figures to hell with the rest of us.
According to the MVP's Microsoft is "very aware" of this issue. However
interestingly enough these same MVP's cannot produce any supporting evidence
that - anybody - other than the poor ripped off users are truly - aware - of
anything.

Face it folks....corporate America looks at $$$ only. If they increase
profits with this stripped down mouse then we will NEVER see those
functions again. Period!! No matter who complains etc....they only care
about $$$ !!!

BTW my Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse 2 says "Made in China" on the bottom!

I'd be happy to use version 4, but it doesn't support the new horizontal
scrolling function.

While I'm thinking of a wish list, if a potential bug-fixed
5.01/5.1 could have a few changes, I'd love to be able to
assign the left/right scroll motions to functions, rather
than just scrolling sideways. I rarely have any need to
scroll horizontally, but if they could be assigned to other
functions/key combinations that would be really useful.

Well I hopethey are taking notice. I am in the market for a new wireless mouse and started off with looking at Microsofts offering since I have used an Intellimouse Optical for several years now wiht no problem. Couldn't believe my eyes when I read that the program-specific customisation was no longer availabe. Anyway I am looking at other mice now - will probably go for the Logitech MX700. Must say I very disappointed and since I have always used microsft mice before today I think this may well be hurting their pockets. Microsoft - 4.12 were trrific drivers - why on earth did you remove the additional functionality??????????
