intel quad = double the cpu heat ???

S

Read Anandtech's writeup on the intel quad in that it
is 2 duals "sandwiched" together; this sounds like that
the quad's heat output would double the duo's output.
Am I missing something else that allows the quad not
to generate twice the heat of a "comparable" duo of the
same frequency?

With the cpu price drop next week, I plan to order the
update parts: mb, cpu, video, memory. As the mb will
be the msi p6n platinum with dual ide ports, I can keep
my 160 gig ide & 2 dvd burners without re-installing
winxp & all the apps until winxp crashes again.

If the quad is much hotter than the duo, I wonder if
my antec sonata II & its 450 w psu can handle the extra heat
if the video is a saphire x1950gt.

WHENEVER you change the motherboard that was used with a harddrive
containing XP, then you MUST reformat the harddrive and do a fresh install
of the OS. Otherwise you can look forward to ongoing Registry errors and
data corruption.

Haven't had any problems with the 2 motherboard changes I've done;
since the nic were on the relative same slot number, didn't even have
to re-activate.

winxp is supposed to & m$ claims that winxp is "plug & play", one
shouldn't have to reinstall when on a new mb. If one has to reinstall,
then m$ lied & winxp is a piece of crap; registry problems is probably
due to some claiming that one doesn't need to clean the registry because
winxp don't have problems running with lots of crap in the registry.

Is winxp so fragile that it cannot do what it claims in recognizing the
hardware changes? But then I recently had to reactive when I just changed
the nic to a different slot; winxp still think & claims that the nic
port is owned/occupied/configed by the non-existent nic in the old slot
& I had to override the config. If winxp is so fragile, then winxp
isn't ready for real work environment.

It isn't just the reinstall of winxp but all the apps & stuff that
are installed as well reconfiguring all the apps; it also means going
thru the services & either change some services to "manual" or just
disabling it. It also mean all the data must be reassinged to the
individual apps for paths.

You may be right, but it will confirm that I winxp should not be
trusted & I should do more work in linux mode since it doesn't
yet rely on a registry yet.

Yeah, but why not celebrate your quad core CPU with a reinstallation?

I would like to see applications keeping all pertinent data in their
own folder. That would help immensely with a reinstall of Windows.
That would probably also help programmers with managing their
upgrades. Microsoft doesn't want it that way though, maybe partly
because it doesn't help tie the user to a single installation of
Windows.

You don't not have to reactivate, there are workarounds for that.

That's about the size of it. Crappy design on Intel's part, personally
I'd wait for chips designed as quads rather then two duals glued
together.

The Pentium-4/Pentium-D series vs the Core Duo showed the reason why
gluing two CPUs together isn't usually the best way to engineer a
multiple core CPU (although for all I know the quads are better
designed, I haven't looked into it yet)

Sorry, but winblows is not written to very high standards. You are asking
for problems by not reinstalling.

Would this be a "full" reinstall or a "repair" reinstall ? I think
the "repair" will salvage most of the registry dealing with my
apps.

I always do full installs. That is why it is important to separate data and
programs, to make full installs easier.

Back when tech tv was worth watching, they had a show about it and I have
done things that way since then.

My interpretation is that the apps (e.g. wordperfect) is also "data" & do
reside on a different partition; a full would still require reinstall of
wp &, I think, 3 service packs.

I think that my photoshop has to reinstall the 6.0 ver in order to install
the 7.x update version + updates/patches, nero + updates, ulead + updates,
etc.

May just get a 500 gig sata for winxp & keep the 160 gig for linx since
newegg currently has available 0% interest for 6 mo on purchases of
ove $500; means another CC which will be shredded after receipt.
