Instant messaging within a home LAN

I have 4 computers on a LAN in my home. They are connected to a router which
is connected to a cable modem. 2 of these computers have WinXP Pro running
on them, and one has WinXP Home. The last has WinMe on it. Unless SIP or
Exchange comes as a part of XP Pro, I do not think I have these. Is there a
way to use Windows Messenger to communicate among these computers (at least
those running XP) withOUT being accessible via Instant Messaging to those
outside the LAN?

No, Exchange and SIP-based servers are Server applications and require a dedicated server (in
some form). You cannot use Windows Messenger for the purposes you describe, but you can use
something like LanTalk XP:
