instant logoff from welcome screen

I have a machine with XP SP1. I was removing virii and
spyware, etc. When I rebooted the machine it made it to
the welcome screen just fine. Two accounts are on the
machine, if I select either account it says, very
quickly, "loading personal settings" then immediately
goes to "logging off" and takes me back to the welcome
screen.

Same thing happens in Safe Mode, from the two existing
accounts or the Administrator's account. I can get to
the welcome screen but logging in to any account, from
safe mode or not, instantley logs me off. Any ideas? I
can't log in using any of the safe mode options,
including "last known good configuration".

Did I delete a needed file (I don't think I did)? Do I
have a damaged registry (in which case I would think
trying the last known good configuration would work,
wouldn't it?

Any help is appreciated. I'm prepared to reinstall
Windows over top of itself unless anyone knows what is
happening.

Carey,
That was the same problem I had yesterday, and when I tried the repair reinstall it gets as far as the nine minute mark (saving settings) and won't go any further. Any suggestions? (e-mail address removed)

Carey,
I had the same problem yesterday, and tried the repair/reinstall from the Recovery Console, and it makes it as far as the nine minute mark, saying it is saving settings, and won't complete the install. Any ideas???

Carey,
Thanks for the confirmation that I made the right choice. I was dealing with the same problem this morning and that was my solution.

Unfortunately, I still haven't been able to make a successful reinstallation as it gets to the 9 minute mark (saving settings), and won't go any further. The only hint of a malfunction I have is at the 14 minute mark where it stops and thinks for quite a long time and then finally tells me that my virtual memory is very low and it needs to increase the size of the Swap File. I OK this window and, like I said, it goes 5 more minutes and then hangs and won't complete. Any ideas???

Sorry for the triple-send . . . while trying to upload the note, it kept saying that there was an error and I should try later . . . then it sent ALL of them <sigh>. It's been one of those kinds of weekends!
