instant desktop password

I recently had a Windows meltdown and lost all my C drive stuff. I'm
trying to retrieve some utilities and tricks I had.
The one I am interested at the moment is the utility to invoke the
desktop password protect box when clicking on an icon in the quick
launch bar.
In other words, when I leave the computer, I would click on that icon in
the quick launch bar and it would immediately bring up the screen saver
password protect box, skipping the display properties wait time.

No need for any tricks since you may apply <WinKey>+<L> at any time.
If you need an icon, create a desktop shortcut as following
%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
and drag that shortcut onto the quicklaunch toolbar.
