Hi, I'm trying to install XP Professional and I keep getting the following
error: Setup cannot copy the file h323msp.dll I have tried different XP CDs
and the same error comes up. This is a clean install on a Maxtor 160GB hard
drive. Anybody has any ideas what is wrong?
Thank you.

Barring cd/dvd read problems and other hardware problems, dust on disk and /
or laser lens / faults on the cd-rom disk itslef etc. - Several times in
the past I've had machines on the bench where a format will not clear a
"Setup cannot copy *.* ...usually a *.dll, will not do the job, and a hd
zero-fill often works like magic !
I've lost count of the times where after a zero-fill - there isn't even a
single "Setup cannot copy *.* ..."

regards, Richard

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective, incompatible, or sub-standard hardware;
in order of likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard.
On very rare occasions the CD drive or installation CD is the problem.

Start with testing the RAM. You might try MemTest86:
http://www.memtest86.com/ It's free. Then you can download and use
Maxtor's hard drive diagnostic utility to test the hard drive. If both
RAM and hard drive test out clean, check with the motherboard
manufacturer for any diagnostic utilities.

FWIW I recently had a machine where, (eventually swapping out the memory
solved all the problems), XP would install without a hitch but
intermittently would refuse to boot - one be left at a black screen -
shortly after POST . Hitting [Del] at power up to get into the bios would
work but, after 20 seconds or so the cursor bar in the bios would freeze.
The freezing problem in the bios was also intermittent.
