Installing XP Pro on new computer

Hello, I have a Intel d865gbf motherboard (P4 socket 478),
Intel Pentium 4 2.4c GHZ w/512K cache 800MHZ FBS. and a
Spectek 512MB 64x64 184 pin DIMM PC2700 DDR.

I can not get Win XP Pro to load, I think that the memory
is to small, but I am not sure. I always come up
with "________.dll" (or what ever) did not laod properly,
to retry hit "Enter" to skip file hit "ESC".

When I think that I finally get it loaded then it wont
start.

I was able tolaod it successfully on my old computer
(experiment to see if the disk was good), but dont want it
on my old computer, I tried to take the hard drive out and
put in my new computer, but that didn't work eather.

Any help would be great, Thanks

I've installed it twice on a laptop with 128mb of RAM. Look elsewhere for
the cause of the problems.

Hi,

I have seen this happen with slower CD-Rom drives. Sounds silly, I know.
That and if SmartDrive isn't installed. Interface another CD-Rom to see if
that helps. BTW, are you installing via the GUI?

Sounds like a virus,
FORMATING HD FOR XP

Clean install:

In order to do a very clean install you may want
to download and create a low level format diskette, this
will insure that the hard drive be wiped clean for XP or
any OS install. Insert XP CD into your CD-Rom drive, power
down the PC. Before powering the PC on, unplug the
Internet connection, scanners, printers, any peripheral
attached including modems, wireless cards.
Power on PC, when windows starts create your
partition(s) as desired (if partitions exist you can
delete them and re-create as many as you want), format
your primary partition and install XP. Once the OS has
installed do not connect to the Internet, install your
anti-virus and firewall, connect to the Internet and do
your live updates for your anti-virus, firewall, then
windows, after this has completed install the rest of your
SW and perform your updates to these.
Download the latest drivers for your peripherals,
plug them in and install them, (note) some peripherals
require that you first install the SW prior to installing
the hardware, consult your manufactures manual for
instructions.

Note: Partition creation suggestions, this example is for
a drive of 40GB's.
C: (3 GB), D: (28 GB), then I would leave the extra
untouched in case I would want to do testing, installing
different OS, Linux or Win 2K/2003 server or any other OS.
Why 3 GB initial partition? It is because you may want to
place your pagefile on this partition most Windows OS's
work better when the pagefile is on a different drive and
since Windows accesses this file every time it is used
this would speed up file access, or file swapping. Another
would be that if for some unforeseen reason you have to
format your PC you can place your Data on this drive then
format your Windows drive safely.

Upgrade install:

First BACKUP YOUR DATA, e-mail and any other info
you want to keep, although windows upgrade should not
delete any of your files MS does not guaranty that things
will go accordingly the way things should.
Second update your anti-virus definitions and run
a check on your system, download, install and update the
definition of a spyware program, these extra steps will
insure a clean upgrade from your previous versions of
windows.
Now you should be ready for the upgrade,
disconnect from the Internet, unplug any peripherals you
have plugged in. Disable or better uninstall spyware, anti-
virus programs, insert the XP CD and choose the option to
upgrade and follow the instructions until complete. Once
this has finished install your anti-virus program,
firewall and reconnect to the Internet and do your live
updates for your anti-virus, firewall, then windows.
Download the latest drivers for your peripherals, plug
them in and install them, (note) some peripherals require
that you first install the SW prior to installing the
hardware, consult your manufactures manual for
instructions.

I am booting from the CD-Rom with the install disk, I have
2 disks, one says "Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" and the other one does not have a label, but
they both seam to work and do the same thing.

I tried to use my Compaq CD-DVD Rom, but that would not
boot on my computer new computer (works fine to boot on my
Compaq, the computer I experimented on) and bought a Older
CD-Rom Manufatured in 1997. That may be my problem then.

This problem is usually related to flaky RAM, I've had problems with Spectek
myself. XP is very resource intensive during install and RAM that seems to
be fine for running Windows 9x/Me or even 2000 will choke on XP.

On rare occasions I've found that the power supply can also be a problem.

Hi Doug,

As I stated, I have seen this over and over to the fact that the skip files
were in the hundreds......

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of
likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On much
less frequent occasions, a bad CD or defective CD drive can also cause
this.

In what way does this sound like a virus? Remember, there's no OS
on the computer as yet, so there's no place for a virus to "reside."

Is this "Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Professional" an
OEM CD that came with a different computer? If so, it's apparently
been specifically designed to NOT install on any other computers, as a
standard anti-piracy feature.
