Installing XP over existing copy

I was wondering if could install a legal copy of XP PRo
over an existing copy that I found out to be Illegal on a
pc that I purchased at an aution.

I don't think your will have a problem, it will probably ask your for the
key and then just type it in.

Try using this keyfinder http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/keyfinder.exe Just
download and run it. It should display your current key. Then click on
Options and use the option to Change Key. Type in the new legal key and
reboot. This will only work if you new legit copy is a Retail version of XP
Pro. I don't know if an OEM key will work but an XP Home version key
definitely will not work.

You need to purchase and use a _legitimate_ full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

Remember, you should also report whomever sold you the pirated
software to the pertinent law enforcement agencies; you've been
defrauded.

directly from Microsoft.
