I have 4 computers in my house that I want to install windows XP. As a home
use do I have to purchase 4 seprate licences??? Or can I install one copy of
the software on all 4 systems? Any help in appreciated.

When you purchase Windows XP, you get a license to install it on 1 desktop
machine and 1 laptop machine. That's it. Any other machines need a new
license. Can anyone else confirm this?

As far as I know you can use I CD but must purchase a License for each
Machine. You can install on all but, only 1 will activate. Microsoft really
wants to enforce this license and I don't think you will see it change

Just as it says, right on the box, you'll need to purchase a
separate WinXP license for each computer on which you install it.

As it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which
it is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to
determine final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which
WinXP licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is
that Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft
mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more
difficult) multiple installations using a single license.

You can buy additional licenses, assuming you have a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses. Be
aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you would
if you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount retailer;
Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.

That's quite incorrect. I suggest that you reread your EULA.
While _some_
Microsoft application retail licenses permit such usage, the
one-desktop-and-one-portable-computer allowance has _never_ applied to
any of Microsoft's operating systems.

Yes. Windows is supplied and always has been, as a license to use on a
single machine. It is precisely because people were doing it on every
machine in the house that Activation was brought in. While it is
possible to get an additional license, the discount is small and it is
probably cheaper to buy ordinary copies at a good discount store
