Is there some advantage to running that exe, rather than setup.exe in the
root dir of the CD?

Setup.exe works *only* from within Windows, not from the command line.

Bruce, several times in the past couple of years, I've reformatted hard
disks, rebooted the machines using DOS boot diskettes, gone to D: drive,
typed setup, and successfully installed XP-Pro. How is this possible if
setup.exe only runs within Windows?

How would I confirm this if I only had the disk, but not the packaging?

Well, an OEM CD will be clearly labeled with "For distribution with a
new PC only. For product support, contact the manufacturer of your PC."
Beyond that, I don't know if you can. I'd look for ReadMe or similar
files on the CD that might contain some sort of identifying information.
