Installing Word 2000

I

inner peace

I recently purchased a computer with Windows XP on it. There was not a copy
of Word so I tried to install Word 2000 that I already had but when I put the
cd in, I received the message that I could not install it because a more
recent version was already installed. However, I cannot find any version of
Word on my computer and don't what to do. Any suggestions?

Have you searched everywhere in the Computer for Word?
(besides where it would be normally)
Maybe they Moved it to a Different File or Re-Named it Something other than
Microsoft Word?

If you recently bought the computer, it's a good bet that it has a trial
version of Office 2007 installed. Go to Control Panel | Add and Remove
Programs, find Office 2007 and uninstall it, then try again to install
Office 2000.

Thank you for replying to my question. Actually, I've had my computer for 2
years and when I first bought it, I loaded Word 2000 on it and it worked
fine. I'm a writer and I wrote an entire book and used Word 2000 and it was
great. However, a few months back I had a virus that techs just couldn't get
rid of so, upon their recommendation, I reformatted the hard drive and
re-installed the programs that came with the computer (on cd's). However,
when I tried re-installing Word 2000 the message told me I already had a
version of it, which I knew I didn't because I was re-installing everything
from scratch (there was nothing in the Control Panel). I ended up installing
another version I had (but don't like), Word 2000 Professional, but have
discovered that the spell check does not work. When I do a search for it, I
get the message that it cannot find mssp 232.dill or MS Spell3.dill. I have
no idea where to get these files and meanwhile, it still won't let me install
the other version of Word 2000 that I originally used without any problems to
write my book. Any suggestions as to what to do?

There is no such application as Word 2000 Professional. If you install Word
2000 from Office 2000 Professional, it will be exactly the same as Word 2000
from any other suite. Is it possible that what you had before (that you
liked) was Works or WordPerfect?

The one I had before was on a different cd. When loading, it said nothing
about "Office Professional 2000". It loaded fine when I first bought the
computer but would not load when I reformatted the hard drive. That's the
only reason I installed the version of Word from another cd I have, the
Office 2000 Professional cd. And the spell checker is not enabled. The
message I get when attempting to use spell check is the one I listed in a
previous e-mail ("cannot find MS Spell3.dill and mssp232.dill). So how do I
get the spell check to work?

Try Help | Detect and Repair, making sure that the Proofing Tools are
selected. They will not be part of the Word install, as they are part of the
Shared Office Components.

You've described my exact situation Suzanne, but I need to know something
before I do this. The Word 2000 program I just bought says "For distribution
with a new PC only." Will this cause a problem with my install? I really
need to know if it's going to work before I open the package of the CD-Rom
and also before I remove Office2007, because I'm using the Word 2007 trials
for my college papers. Thanks!

The Office 2000 you have is an OEM version, which means it is licensed only
for the computer on which it was sold. So, no, you can't legally install it
on another machine and, since it requires activation, I believe, you
probably wouldn't be able to activate it on a different machine.

If you choose to upgrade to Office 2007, I would strongly advise you not to
wait till the trial is over and then buy a key online. Instead, purchase a
full retail version (with media) either in a bricks-and-mortar store or by
"mail order" online so that you will have the CDs/DVDs as well as the
license.

If you have no need for Outlook and don't expect to be using the program for
anything commercial, I'd advise getting the Home and Student Edition, which
will be much the most reasonably priced *unless* your college bookstore
offers an "academic" price on one of the fuller versions.
