installing windows xp

i was wondering could someone help me. i put in my windows xp disc to do a
clean install and when it is copying files it stops at 27% and won't go
anymore.

also i have a friend who tryied to install windows xp on her computer it
went all through copying files but then a message came up saying it was the
wrong parimeter she is confused she dosen't know what a paremeter is? can you
help.
