Installing windows 98

Patrick Owusu-Siaw

I upgraded my computer from windows 98 to Windows xp. Now I am having
problems with windows xp and I want to go back to windows 98 but the recent
type of windows I am running will not allow it(windows xp).
Anybody has any idea how to install windows 98 on a computer that is already
running on windows xp?

Hi

If you upgraded from Win 98, is there no option to uninstall in Add/Remove
Programs? You would have had to opt to save the uninstall files when
upgrading for that option to be available.

That's right. The easiest way to do this is to take a Win98 boot diskette
and format the C drive as FAT32. Then reboot with the Win98 CD in, and
install.

If you wish, you can subsequently install XP as a dual-boot. But, it has
to be in that sequence - the older OS must be installed first.

However, I would suspect that the best overall choice would be to identify
and fix, if possible, the problems with XP. If the physical hardware is
reliable, XP can be reliable and stable.

Are you now trying to install Win98 over WinXP? If so it can not be
done.

Did you take a look at the two article I posted previously?

If an uninstall is not possible you will have to perform a clean
install of Win98.
Here is an article that will step you though it.
Windows 98 Restore By Ron Badour MS MVP:

One item this article does not mention is it the drive partition was
converted to NTFS with the original upgrade to WinXP. If so the
simplest way to remove NTFS (or any) partitions is with
ZAP or WIPE from this site. This creates an unpartitioned disk so that
you can create FAT or FAT32 partitions and format them.

Describe the problems in detail. Might be easier to fix them than
reload 98 from scratch.

Hi Patrick,

Since you had Windows 98, I assume you made a Windows 98 Startup
Diskette?

Boot up the computer using the Windows 98 Startup Diskette. Go into DOS.
Use Fdisk to wipe the Hard Drive completely clean. If your Hard Drive is
large enough to support two partitions, you can partition the Hard Drive
equally and install Windows 98 on the first partition and install Windows XP
on the second partition, and allow Windows XP to control the booting into
Windows 98 and Windows XP, so you can learn Windows XP, while having Windows
98 also.

Remember to back up any data files and e-mails you want to save or keep
first.
