Hello

I have a Dell Latitude C640 with a LG external Combo drive
attached to the USB port. I wiped the hardrive and
formatted it but cannot see the CDRom drive thus cannot
proceed with OS installation. The external CD/DVDrom
device works fine when I attach it to another computer.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I think there are two ways of installing Win2000
on your laptop:

a) Install its disk as a slave disk in some desktop
PC, then copy the Win2000 installation CD to
that disk.

b) Boot the machine with a network boot disk
(http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/network/), then
make a connection to some networked PC
that has a shared CD drive. This implies that
your Dell laptop has a network adapter.

Take a look at my post of 2:59 today in the m.p.w.hardware newsgroup.
The Subject is "re: Monitor". The setup diskettes may solve your problem.

Will your set of boot diskettes recognise an external
USB CD drive?

Another option would be to copy the i386 directory to the laptop and
install from there. Type winnt.exe to start the install from within
the i386 directory.

But how does the OP copy the i386 directory to his laptop,
seeing that he does not have access to a CD drive?

My choices in the BIOS are Diskette Drive, Internal HDD,
Cardbus NIC, Onboard NIC, and Diagnostics

Thanks Glenn

Thanks

I'll try one or both in the next day or two, I'll let you
know how it goes

Glenn
