Installing vista over xp

Is it posible to install vista without having to reinstall all my
programs?
I have an acronis true image backup but I'm thinking that if I do a
restore it will also restore xp. Then what?
This is breaking my little brain.
Please help if you can.
Thanks

If the system was running Windows XP when you made the image of course XP
will be there if you restore the image. That's what an image is for: to
bring you back to the exact moment in time when you created the image - much
like a photograph.

Maybe you are really asking something else?

Do a Vista upgrade from within a running XP System.

Then use Acronis to do an image backup.

Thanks for the replies.
You're right. I should have asked: If I do a vista upgrade from within
my existing xp will it wipe out my all my programs? Will vista
automatically format my hard drive?

Hi,

An upgrade implies that files, programs, settings, and user accounts are
ported from the existing installation into the new one. An upgrade does not
require a format, that would be a clean install. What is most important is
that you upgrade with an appropriate version of Vista. IE: XP Home to Vista
Home Basic, Premium, Business, or Ultimate. XP Pro to Business or Ultimate
(not any of the Home flavors).
