Installing Vista on a external USB drive

Has anybody tried to install Vista on an external USB drive?

I recently tried with a recent build and Vista gets the partition set up,
and starts copying files, but on the reboot it blue screens as soon as it
goes past the main boot screen.

Is this even possible?

Build is 5361 with a Maxtor OneTouch USB drive

I've tried and tried, but the setup just doesn't recognise the USB drive.
I'm thinking it's something to do with the legacy USB drivers on setup...

Hi Rick,

MS has stated that installing Vista on an external USB drive is not
supported. If you can go to the stage of copying files, that is not by
Design.

What I suggest is that you send in a bug report with the exact model of USB
Drive so they can close this loophole.

Email me if you need more information.

Thanks Jabez,

That lets me forget about this avenue of getting vista to run on my laptop.

No luck with VPC either unfortunately so I'm hosed for the moment and I'm
not about to put another drive in this machine <g>...

Thanks,

I'll put a bug report in for the USB install issue.

I recommend installing Vista on external SATA drive (eSata)!

LOL jabez.
hey, i'm trying.

i just found out in my other thread that if i install a second hard drive in
my laptop, that the master boot record on my c drive will be changed.
that doesn't appeal to me either, so i'm back to the drawing board.
if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

thank you.

Dr. Indera

hi jabez,

something tells me that i would be better off <safer> if i waited until i
could buy another laptop ($700 or less) that will run vista/office 2007 and
whatever else i need to test on.
i did see one laptop for $599 after rebates, but i can't figure out what
video card it has.
i can understand having steeper hardware requirements.
i just thinks that there should be a way to have beta software run on our
current computers without touching or possibly messing something up with out
current setup.

: Hey Indera,
:
: Well, installing a 2nd hard disk and installing XP on it does change the
: master boot record, but the boot screen will be showing your OS from the
1st
: hard disk and the 2nd hard disk.
