Installing SP2 without activating XP

People who buy major manufacturer computer systems are essentially getting
the OS for free..

You mean it's included in the cost. It's not free.
there are limitations on it and rightly so.. the OS is not
transferable to another computer, and all support is down to the vendor.. I
see nothing unfair in that.. what I do see as unfair is the way that vendors
do not make this clear when the systems are sold..

Yeah, for some strange reason when a person buys a computer with XP
installed, they think they have bought XP. I wonder why that is.

You have to pass WPA first.

WPA: Windows Product Activation

WGA: Windows Genuine Advantage

The first is so you can use windows and what you're having a problem
with. The second is to revalidate your XP for downloads from Windows
Updates. IOW, you have to prove to MS that your copy is legit not once
but twice.

What makes you think you have a pirated copy of XP?

Replace it with a legit one.

To all intents and purposes, you are getting XP for free.. add up the cost
of components at retail value and if you can get close to the price that
some of the vendors sell systems, you then add $150 for the OEM operating
system.. oops.. and don't forget the 1 year BTB warranty.. then there is the
store warranty.. 30 days or the minute that you walk out of the store,
whichever comes first..

Has the customer paid for the software?.. in as much as they paid for the
entire hardware/software package, yes.. in reality, what people are getting
for their money is HP/Compaq, Dell, IBM hardware with an OEM OS thrown in
for the convenience and 'value added' to the customer, and for being able to
do this, the manufacturers and/or vendors make a promise to Microsoft that
they will fully support the software.. ha..

Do the manufacturers and/or vendors ever make the limitations of included
OEM software clear to the customer?.. hell no.. they are too busy making
false claims like "this computer will always be upgradeable"..

Mike,

About 6 months ago, I upgraded my Windows 2000 professional to XP
professional. The CD (from CompUSA) said that this is XP pro with Service
pack 2. The properties tab under My Computer dis not say Service Pack 2 so
today I downloaded the whole thing and tried to install it. At the very last,
XP says that this machine has invalid ProductID and cannot install SP2.

Anything I can do to get this sorted out?

If you are trying to install a WinXP Service Pack and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q326904

You need to purchase and a _legitimate_ retail or OEM full license
of WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CDs and Product Keys.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

You should also report whomever sold you this license to your local
law enforcement agencies; you've been defrauded.

Sounds like you need to go back to CompUSA to get this sorted out. You didn't
get what you paid for.

Hope this helps,
