Hi,
Is it possible to install SP2 (and other security fixes) on an illegal copy
of WindowsXP (that is, without registering XP)?
Thanks.

Don't know. Why don't you try it and tell us how it goes?

Kerry

There is no need to register Windows XP.
As for "illegal copy", buy a legal license and avoid problems.

Why not leave your full name and address so Microsoft can contact you.

Good one, like a guy wearing a mask, stopping at the Police station
at 2AM to ask where the Bank is. Has to be a joke - nobody can
be that Addlebrained to come here and ask that.

Yes, it is possible. You will need your warez CD (or "corporate version" if
you prefer). You will need to download SP2 to the hard drive and slip
stream software. You will then create a slip streamed version of Windows XP
SP2.

Google the following terms:

XP SP2 slip stream

Wally isn't that dumb.. while he might well go into the station wearing a
mask, he would be sensible enough to take it off such that he could be
properly understood by the Officer on duty..

Registering is not the issue here.. activation and registration are
different 'animals'..

Re. SP2, it will not install on pirated versions 99% of the time, but if
Windows has been activated (validated) SP2 will load..

You need SP2..

Why don't you explain why you say it is illegal?

Riiiiiiiiiiight. Not only will it install, you can get all the
subsequent updates as well.

That would be auto-update critical updates.. if you take a pirated version
(the Pro 'corporate') to the Windows Update site to manually retrieve
updates, WGA will weed it out and not give access..

There are people who deliberately deceive by telephone activating OEM and
retail versions on more than one computer at home and, most likely, they do
get updates.. good for them, but I have no doubt that they would squawk like
all hell if somebody was to illegally appropriate stuff of theirs..

That's a good point - any latitude that Microsoft shows on PA will
be taken advantage of. If the abuse of the "Call-for-Activation" to
get a 2nd/3rd PC activated gets too high, they'll tighten up on that
aspect as well. Suppose it falls under the category of "Crooks and
Idiots ruin it for everybody else".

Not true, sorry. All one need do is disable WGA and you're in like flint.

Don't misunderstand me; I am not condoning it. I am just clarifying what
can and cannot be done technically. The moral and ethical issue is a
different story.

Ruin what, having to grovel to MS to use software one has paid for?

People who buy major manufacturer computer systems are essentially getting
the OS for free.. there are limitations on it and rightly so.. the OS is not
transferable to another computer, and all support is down to the vendor.. I
see nothing unfair in that.. what I do see as unfair is the way that vendors
do not make this clear when the systems are sold..
