Last year, I tried installing SP2 and I started getting frequent Blue
Screens of Death. So I had to get rid of it. I don't even remember how
I managed that; I remember it took me a zillion tries before I managed
to flush it and reboot a stable system.

I would like to try again, after upgrading all my apps and drivers. Is
there a way to install SP2 so that if it doesn't work out I can easily
uninstall it again? Will System Restore definitely roll it back out?

Steven;
After SP-2 is installed, there is a listing in Add/Remove Programs "Service
Pack2".
Double click and follow prompts to uninstall SP-2.

Follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist to help be sure the computer
is ready for SP-2:

This eliminates most installation problems associated with SP-2.

Good luck, you're going to need it! SP2 = YUCK!

Luck has nothing to do with a successful SP-2 installation.
Those counting on luck are already half way to failure.
Instead make sure the computer is ready for SP-2 before attempting
installation.

The majority have no problems.
All pre-existing problems, known & unknown, need to be resolved before
installing anything, especially a Service Pack.
