Most antivirus applications have an icon in the systray.
right click on it and click Disable.
You can also go to MSCONFIG Start-up tab:
Start/Run Type "msconfig" click OK
Uncheck it and anything else that may be a problem (make notes what
you uncheck so you can recheck afterwards)

To uninstall, go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
