I'm trying to install some software from a download website. I never had
problems with this software before. Actually Im re-installing it. Anyway, I
get this message after the software starts to install. This is what it says:

THIS PATCH PACKAGE COULD NOT BE OPENED. VERIFY THAT THE PATCH PACKAGE
EXISTS, AND THAT YOU CAN ACCESS IT. OR CONTACT THE APPLICATION VENDOR TO
VERIFY THAT THIS IS A VALID WINDOWS INSTALLER PATCH PACKAGE.

Now this sounds to me, that my administrator settings have been changed some
kind of way. No one uses this computer but me. I'm the administrator and use
this computer this way all the time. Can anyone shed some light on this?

You probably need to clear up your registry of the vestiges of your previous
install.

Similar principles probably apply as the solutions for these programs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/295823/en-ca
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;812490

So you can do it by hand or resort to a *shock* *horror* (dare I say it?)
"registry cleaner".

Set a system restore point before, if you try that route.
