Installing service pack2 SP2

G

Guest

I have a 4 year old HP desktop that came with Windows XP installed. My
windows update has advised me to install SP2, but I always run into a problem
and have to give up on the installation. This has not been a problem up to
this point, but I have purchased a new ZUNE, and it requires the SP2 pack be
installed.
When I go to install the installation goes along until it hits a point it
gives this message:
"SETUP CANNOT COPY THE FILE PROGMAN.EXE
ENSURE THE LOCATION SPECIFIED BELOW IS CORRECT, OR CHANGE IT AND INSERT
WINDOWS XP SYSTEM FILES IN THE DRIVE YOU SPECIFY."
It is looking for the file in : C:\windows\system32\dllcache. I cannot find
a file or folder named "dllcache" I did a search for progman.exe and found
progman (not listed with an .exe) and copied it to where the program is
looking c:\windows\system32.
Can I find this progman.exe on the microsoft website and download? Will that
fix the problem?

First, make sure all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs are turned off
during the install.

Also, make sure that the computer is free of malicious software:
Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
Web pages.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

[I"d like to ask you why SP2 wasn't installed as soon as it was released in
Aug-04, but I won't.]

You may have a W32/Attech-A infection:

1. Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your HijackThis
log to an appropriate forum.

Check for Hijackware

When all else fails, HijackThis (http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe)
is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware.

**Post your HijackThis log to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or
other appropriate forum for expert analysis, not here.**

2. Do not attempt to install SP2 until an expert gives your HijackThis log a
clean bill of health.

And I thought that I was a wimp for waiting until Aug-05.... Actually, I
was waiting for an update for the BIOS and updates for various software
vendors.
