Installing programs and utilities

I am having problems with my installations of applications and utilities under Windows XP Professional. I have been installing programs under my personal account with administrative privileges, not under the administrator account. Some of the programs become available only in my account. Others are available in all accounts, but some of the registry entries may be missing from accounts other than mine. Still other programs appear in all accounts, but execute only if the account has administrative privileges. I don’t understand the reason for this variability! What are the recommended practices for program installation, and how can I predict the results? Is this documented anywhere

Thank
