Installing old programs in Windows XP

Thanks for your reply. I've tried right clicking on the program's setup
file, selecting Properties from the drop down menu, clicking the
compatibility tab and then placing a tick in the box next to the 'run this
program in compatibility mode for' and clicking the arrow in the dialogue box
just beneath that option and selecting an operating system to run it under.
It doesn't offer an option for Windows XP, only Windows 95, 98, NT and 2000,
so I was unable to install the program. Any more suggestions?

I think you misunderstood ...select compatibility for win 95 or 98 (which
your program is meant to run on) , then try the install
 
Choose the operating system that you used to run the program under. (95 or
98 in your case.)
