I have read articles posted out on this Newsgroup stating
that Office 97 works well on an XP (Home Edition) PC. The
problem I am encountering, is that when I attempt to load
my personal copy of Office 97 Upgrade (Standard Edition)
package, the install program will not recognize that I
have MS Works (packaged with XP) already installed.

If you have a fairly new version of Microsoft Works installed,
then the upgrade version of Office 97 is not going to recognize
it as a qualifying product to upgrade from since the new version
of Microsoft Works did not exist in 1997.

What if I install MS Works 4.5 on my XP (Home Edition),
and then install the Office 97 Upgrade? Can I have two
versions of Works running on my XP Desktop?

Well, no, of course it won't. How could a 7-year- old
installation routine possibly be expected to recognize a much newer,
2-year old product as a qualifying application? To use that Office 97
Upgrade, you'll need to prove ownership of either an older (then 1997)
version of Office or an older version of Works Suite.
