Installing Network Service

I am trying to get a Compaq running XP home to work on a network. It will
not see the network. When going to Control Panel/system/computer name, I get
message that the workgroup can not be changed until the network service is
installed.

I went to control panel/add-remove software/modify windows. Windows
networking is checked. I unchecked it and uninstalled, then rechedked to
reinstall. still no windows networking service.

Any ideas short of format/reinstall?

Try running the Netwrok Setup Wizard.

It generally sorts out everything for you.
