Unfortunately you really can't uninstall the older
messenger- i had the same problem. I guess the older one
is integrated in the Windows and the new messenger is a
seperate application (not interated).
In other words, you can't uninstall it :(.

Are you sure it was MSN 4.7? MSN Messenger will update the MSN Messenger
but you probably still have Windows Messenger 4.7 on your machine. They are
very similar programs, but they are different, so 6 wont remove Windows
Messenger 4.7.

you should un-install messanger 4.7 from add/remove program. Then go to
"c:\Program Files\Messenger". Rename msmsgs.exe to some thing like
msmsgs.exe.old. If there's some error about renaming the file, reboot your
PC and try again.

Andy,

Your post is incorrect, you certainly *CAN* uninstall Windows Messenger. See
my reply to the OP.

pat,

What you suggest will not remove Windows Messenger. It will simply "Add or
remove access to Windows Messenger from the Start Menu" which is quoted from
the "Add/Remove Windows Components" dialog accompanying the checkbox option
for Windows Messenger.

To remove Windows Messenger see my other post in this thread.

Greetings Peter,

You can remove Windows Messenger 4.7, but if you do, you will be preventing
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize
Messenger from working (or loading without problems). You can just disable Windows Messenger
4.7, by opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this program
when Windows starts'. This won't stop it from being loaded by some other application though.
As well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs,
Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list
and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed Windows XP Service Pack
1 -- if you haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't remove Windows
Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way, and allow MSN Messenger to work
properly.

Also see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=330117 for more information on Windows Messenger 4.7 and MSN
Messenger.
