Installing ATI 4.3 drivers

I have 4.2 installed with the ATI control panel. Do I have to do an
Uninstall
of both of those or can I just uninstall the driver and install the small
download of just the driver? Is it better to uninstall everything and
download the big file and install it? Thanks,

Just grab the complete package (driver and control panel) and install
over the top, worked fine for me and no need to uninstall.

Sheesh, It specifically tells you not to do that.

It works, except when it doesn't. Never had a problem myself. This does
not apply to MMC tho.

I have done that with every driver release since about 3.7, and never had a
single problem!!!!

You've been very fortunate, then. When overwriting an existing
installation, certain files will be "locked" because they are in use while
windows is running. These files will NOT be overwritten with newer version,
therefore you will be running a mixture of old and new. This in itself may
not cause problems, but removing the old drivers (using DriverCleaner) is
always the recommended procedure.

the files in use get overwritten during the reboot, that's why the driver
installation tells you to reboot at the end!!!

Exactly. The installer is written to ensure that video drivers in use are
overwritten during reboot. It's been that way forever with ATI drivers,
well, since the Mach 8 anyway.

Lots of driver installs do that - some just inform you and some don't
That is what the "Updating settings" messages are about when you boot in
Win9x/ME anyway. Has to write the new file before Windows needs it.
