Installing a terminal service shortcut on 2000 workstation

I have a 2000 server running Terminal Services. I have 2000 professional
workstations. I cannot remember how I setup short cuts to go to Terminal
Services and run the terminal services applications from the work stations.
The workstations I have setup go directly into Terminal Services and show me
the Desktop of the server. They (the short cuts) also log onto the server
terminal services. It has been a couple of years, can someone step me
through it? I have been stumbling through it with not success.

Start the Rdp client (should be somewher on your Start menu - look
for Remote Desktop Connection, or type "mstsc" in a command window).
Fill in the name of your server and configure the connection options.
On the geberal tab of the client, click on "Save as" and save the
settings in an .rdp file. Put this rdp file on your desktop, or in
you Startup folder.

When I use Terminal Services to create the connection, I then have to run a
remote desktop connection when I get on to the server desktop. I end up
logging in a minimum of twice and sometimes three times. The old connections
I set up log onto the server and run remote desktop so I can minimize the
terminal service window and work on the desktop of the workstation. Has
something changed? My old connections say they are opened by remote desktop
connection and the new ones I am creating don't have anything about which
application opens them and give me not opportunity to save them as a remote
desktop application. When I run mstsc.exe, I get the Terminal Services
Client programs - not remove desktop.

I don't remember it being this difficult before. I know I have not gotten
smarter, but I didn't think I had gotten dumber either.

Remote Desktop and Terminal Services client are 2 different names
for the same thing: mstsc.exe
Fill in your connection options, including your username, password
and domain and the application you want to start, save this on your
desktop and you should have what you want.
This is assuming that the Terminal Server is configured
accordingly, meaning that the option "Always prompt for password"
is unchecked on the server.

If I run remote desk top on the server, I get a bar at the top of the window
that allows me to minimize the terminal service session and work on the
workstation desktop. To do this requires another logon and I am then running
the remote desktop inside the terminal service session which then doesn't
allow me to get back to the workstation desktop. The old shortcuts I have do
run the window with a bar at the top of the windwo allowing me to minimize
the window and they go there directly from the desktop shortcut of the
workstation.

What additional program is running that gives me the control bar across the
top of the screen? The shortcut has a "RDP" extension. You earlier
indicated that I should be able to save the connection with this extension.
I do not have a general tab or the opportunity to save the file from my
version of Terminal Services (ver 5.00 build 2195). How did I ever create
this short cut in the first place? When right click on this shortcut, I am
given the opportunity to edit it and it edits in Remote Desktop Connection
with General, Display, Local Resources, Programs, and Experience tabs. What
is different about this shortcut? I want to make them all like this one.

Is there a way I can send you the shortcuts or pictures of the shortcuts. I
have copied them with alt+ "+" but cannot paste them here.

I don't have a clear picture of exactly what it is that you see,
but version 5.00 is rather old. It's the version that came with
Windows 2000, and I wouldn't use that anymore, since later versions
have more features (support for redirected network printers). If
the control bar at the top was already present in version 5.00, I
don't recall.

No, but you can take a screen dump, put it on a website and post
the URL here.

I have been diligent about the updates and use automatic update - that
doesn't keep this updated? Where can I get the lastest verison?

Eureka - I clicked on your profile last night, went to your webpage, and
found the site to download the updated Remote Desktop Connection. Oh how
wonderful it is. Thank you for your help. It works so such easier with the
right tools.

Thank you for your patience and perseverance.
