hi,
I have an XP operating system and some of the programs am intending to use
is not compatable with XP. I am thinking of adding a new hard drive and
instaling 98 on it. Is there any way I can do this without formating my
existing hard drive (NTFS formatted)?
Thanks

I would suggest trying Windows XP's Program Compatibility
Wizard with your Windows 98 applications. Otherwise, you're
likely faced with performing a "clean install" of Windows XP.

In addition to Carey's great suggestions, have you considered using VMware
Workstation or Microsoft Virtual PC?

Microsoft Virtual PC 2004

VMware Workstation 4.5
http://www.vmware.com/products/desktop/ws_features.html

Both these product effectively emulate having a second PC in software. That
way, you can both operating systems at the same time. Both vendors have
evaluation copies you can download.

VMware is by far the better product, but it is also the more expensive.
Virtual PC's performance seems lacking for Windows XP guest operating
systems, but since you're considering running a Windows 98 guest, I think
the performance of either would be good.

I agree with Carey's approach of using the Application Compatibility Toolkit
to see if you can get the program to run under XP as a first step.

Hope this helps

How do you know the programs are not compatible? I have not found a
single program that I have that will not run under WindowsXP.

VirtualPC is a good option. I have had both WinXP and Win98 running
under VirtualPC on a host WinXP system. The only thing I have noticed
is that Internet speed in guest system is about 2/3 that of the host.

Good luck, jimbo
