Installed SP2, PC now locks up during boot!

About a month ago I installed SP2 to both computers on my 2-PC
wireless network. Everything seemed OK with the exception that about
20% of the time the PC's lock up during boot. Sometimes one locks,
sometimes the other, and at times it's neither or both. The only
commonality I've seen is that after the lockup, all of the desktop
icons are in place with the exception of Zone Alarm Pro - its icon is
nowhere to be found! I am using ZAP 5.1.033.000.

FWIW, the Windows SP2 firewall has been shut off since the day I
installed SP2, so this should not be the problem. I'd rather not use
the SP2 firewall as it doesn't have the strengths or features of ZAP!

Does anyone have any idea why I'm having these lockups. FWIW, I'm
glad it's only 20% of the time or I'd not have been able to send this
message!

Then check Event Viewer (Start - > Settings -> Control Panel - >
Administrative Tools - > Event Viewer) for possible errors.

Other thing to try …

Remove ZA, and test without it.

Update applications, drivers (especially for network cards) and firmware
(WAP/Router).

It could be that the version of Zone Alarm Pro is not compatable with XPSP2.

The troubleshooting path is obvious. Use the XP firewall and disable
ZAP. After a couple of days or so, if your system doesn't lock up, ZAP
is the culprit. You might want to contact them for a solution. If they
don't have one, get another firewall.

According to the Event Viewer, I'm getting this system error many
times a day:

DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is
disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. "

Hi Bill,

I don't think DCOM error has caused the freeze issue. I believe it is Zone
alarm, please entirely remove it and test this issue.
