Installation Variables

I find a number of benefits in deploying 'xp' across several partitions on
the disk (c- system, p-Programs, t-temp, d-data) I notice in the registry
that the terms %userprofile% is used and similar variables. What I cannot do
is find where these variables are set or modified.

Can anyone help please?

Windows XP can only be initially installed on one partition.
There is really no benefit to "deploying 'xp' across several partitions".
Any relocation must be performed after Windows XP is installed.

Please read the following:

Thanks Carey,

I have read those articles and they make a clear piont. Perhaps I should
explian in slightly more detail, why I like to run on muti-partitions.

As you comment it does not do lots for running performance but it does help
alot in the following areas.

1. defrag is alot faster.
2. it makes back-ups easier for the simple users I build for, cos I put docs
on a different partition to pics, music and vids. this means they can just
back-up 'D Drive' and it keeps the size of that realistic for them.

3. The biggest reason is in a system recovery. they have the option of which
bits to recover and a recovery of 'C Drive' ie: Windows takes ab out 2 -3
cd's and is done by ghost in about 10 mins. WITHOUT LOSSING A PERSONAL DATA.
My users love this cos if they press a wrong button on the internet or their
kids wreck the computer, they can totally reliably go back to the way I set
them up quickly and safely without hours of complicated software loading.

Anyway I works for us!

My problem is this?

I set the computer up for them and move things like temp files to a
different partition. This is mainly done in the registry.
The only way I can make it work is to replace the variables with static paths.

This does not work well if the operator of the system adds a new user!

That is why I would like to redefine the variables, or some of them.

Through reaseach it seems that this can be done by parsing the autoexec.bat
as each user logs on, which assumable means that new variables can be set.

However, my real desire is to know where these variables are set in the
first place!

Call me mad but I care for about 15 computers some of which are 100 miles
away and this system has worked OK up til now!

But reasigning the original variables will make my build process alot easier.
If you can direct me towards the answer I will be very greatful.

Regards

Simon
