Installation Problems installing XP upgrade over Win 98

I was trying to upgrade to Windows XP from Windows 98.

First I got an error message saying that cfgmgr.dll was corrupt and to replace it.
I did that and then got an error message that was fatal, but did not give me any speciifcs (I looked at the log file, but it was all greek to me. Mostly errors from migilog.exe, or something like that). So I restart, this time I choose the installation repair option. I get quite a ways through and even set up users. However, the login isn't working because I am not connected to the domain that was present when the computer was Win 98. I try to restart again and I get a new issue. The installation process is looking for a file that it can't find "asms". It tells me that this is on Windows XP Professional SP1 CD, which I don't have! This is driving me up the wall!

If you selected "new copy" of xp when booting to xp cd,it should format the
hd first, then start installation. How do you get to installation looking for
asms, first you delete existing partition (current OS),then create a new
partition, then xp starts formatting.Everything gets deleted during delete partition.
