From what I understand of the other posts in this group, if I get a retail
version of XP Pro, I can choose to do a clean install OR an upgrade.
If I get an OEM version of XP Pro, I can only do either a clean install or
an upgrade (depending on the OEM version that I buy)
Please can someone let me know if I have this correct.
Thanks

Hi,

As far as I know, there doesn't exist any OEM versions of WinXP
that can do an upgrade, they are strictly clean install only...

All correct, except that OEM versions can't upgrade, They are meant for new
computers that don't have a operatiing system installed.

There is no OEM version that allows you to perform an upgrade installation -
at least none that are *sold* to anyone.

OEM versions of Windows XP:

-- cannot upgrade over an existing Windows installation.
-- must be installed "clean" on a freshly reformatted drive or partition.
-- cannot be transferred to a different computer in the future.
-- the license cannot be sold or transferred to another user.
-- are not eligible for free Microsoft technical support.
-- must be purchased with some type of computer hardware.
-- any problems whatsoever with the installation CD or Product Key.
is not eligible for Microsoft support....you have to deal with the "seller".
-- cost less than "retail versions" due to the above limitations/risks.

Best Advice: Purchase a "Retail Version" of Windows XP!

Thank you all for the posts. I managed to get myself a bit confused about
something. Are you able to perform a clean install if you buy a CD which is
being sold as Upgrade. The OEM thing was just a red herring from being
confused. Sorry. I'm only talking about retail versions.

Yes, you can use an Upgrade version for clean installs, but you will
be asked to put a qualifying OS media (e.g. a Win98 CD or a Win2k CD,
or WinXP Home CD if you are upgrading to WinXP Pro) into the CD
drive during the installation.

Okay, now that you're probably getting fed up of me asking questions, I have
just one more. Does the same hold true for getting a CD which is not being
sold as an upgrade. I.e., does a regular new XP CD allow you to do an
upgrade as well as a clean installation?
Thanks

Hi,

As long as it is a retail version, then the answer is yes.
