Is it possible to install WinXP Pro over WinXP Home without simply starting
over? I have used XP Pro for years, and purchased a laptop with XP Home
installed. I thought I could adjust, but it is starting to look otherwise.
Thanks for any info. Phasr

An upgrade to Windows XP Pro is a smooth transition and will not affect your
current programs or files if you use the following procedure:

1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" [boxed] of Windows XP Professional.
2. Uninstall your antivirus program.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD, DVD, or other backup media.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select
the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program, then defrag your hard drive.

An XP Pro full retail or upgrade disk will upgrade your existing XP
Home system to Pro. An XP Pro OEM disk WILL NOT DO THIS!!!

Yes, if you use an XP Pro Full Retail or Upgrade CD. An OEM release will
not do an upgrade. I'd recommend getting an Upgrade release since it is
cheaper.

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things can
go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all important
to you, back it up before proceeding.

The upgrade from WinXP Home to WinXP Pro, in particular, almost
always goes smoothly, as both operating systems use the same kernel.

Yes. It's the easiest and most likely successful of all possible upgrades.

But are you sure you need to or want to do this? XP Professional and XP Home
are exactly the same in all respects, except that Professional has a few
features (mostly related to networking and security) missing from Home. For
most (but not all) home users, even those with a home network, these
features aren't needed, would never be used, and buying Professional instead
of Home is a waste of money.

For details go to

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp

Also note one other point not mentioned on any of those sites: Professional
allows ten concurrent network connections, and Home only five.

I want to reply to all respondents. I found all of your submissions to be
concise an intelligent. In particular, I wish to thank Carey Frisch, MVP for
his thorough assistance, and also Ken Blake, MVP for his questioning of my
wanting to upgrade. I really appreciate the "devils advocate" in most all
matters, because I cannot possibly know everything. If you were not
mentioned, you input was nonetheless appreciated. A big thank you to all.
