Hi,
I have an HP 7920 running Windows ME and i want to reformat and
install XP Home.

I have the bios set so that the cd rom is first and the hard drive at
the bottom of the list. The win xp is a new home edition right off
the shelf and i can open it once the system has booted up so the
drive reads the cd ok.

I cannot get the cd to run before windows ME opens up.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, first I would check the BIOS setting again.
Then, if that doesn't work as described, take the hard drive off the BIOS
boot list entirely if possible.
Then, if that doesn't work, you might want to format the hard drive first
using a boot floppy of some sort - I don't think it matters much which sort
because the install should format the HD anyway.
Or, boot into a different mode - like you would boot into Safe Mode - but
into command line mode and format the hard drive from there.
There are lots of possibilities.

Isn't there a key you must press during POST to select the boot drive? Try
pressing esc during the beginning of the POST.

Have you checked the HP web site for your models ability to upgrade to XP?
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address bar.
